Overview
Are you an Overseas Qualified Dentist who wishes to register with the General Dental Council in the United Kingdom? Are you looking for a career move to the UK or considering broadening your horizons? If so we are the team that can assist you, we at Provisional Registration Ltd are a private and independent consultancy providing guidance to the Overseas Qualified Dentist with the registration process to the General Dental Council (GDC).
We also help and guide those that wish to register as a Dental Hygienist, Dental Therapist, Orthodontic Therapist, Dental Technician and Dental Nurse, with an overseas dental qualification using the route to registration under Section 36C of the Dentists Act 1984. Guidance is provided through our sister company Route to Registration UK Ltd.
Our aim is simple, we want to help you successfully submit a completed application to the General Dental Council (GDC). We want you to be confident that by appointing us we will provide you a high quality service which is specific to your individual needs.
To be eligible to apply under this route, you must have been awarded your Dental Care Professional Qualification from outside of the United Kingdom and be able to provide evidence of professional experience as a Dental Care Professional.
Provisional registration for overseas-qualified dentists
As of February 2025, the General Dental Council (GDC) does not yet offer provisional registration for overseas-qualified dentists. In February 2024, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) initiated a consultation to grant the GDC the authority to provisionally register dentists who qualified abroad. This provisional registration would enable these dentists to practice in various dental settings across the UK under the supervision of a fully registered dentist.
The consultation concluded in May 2024, and the GDC welcomed the proposal, recognising it as a valuable opportunity for overseas dentists to adapt to the UK practice environment under supervision. However, the GDC emphasised the importance of developing detailed rules and systems to ensure patient safety and effective supervision.
Implementing provisional registration is a complex process that requires collaboration across the dental sector and the four nations of the UK. The GDC has indicated that it will consult on the necessary processes before establishing the detailed rules that will underpin the arrangements.
Given the current status, overseas-qualified dentists aiming to practice in the UK should continue to pursue existing pathways, such as the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE), until provisional registration becomes available.
